Where AI Gets Its Local Answers: Inside the Citation Sources
Quick Answer
Reddit accounts for roughly 40% of all AI citations. The places AI trusts most are not the places most businesses have spent the last decade optimizing. Here's what the citation data shows - and what it means for your business.
When an AI assistant answers a question, it's pulling from somewhere. The uncomfortable truth for most business owners is that "somewhere" usually isn't their website. Across the major AI models, a single platform - Reddit - accounts for roughly 40% of all citations. On Perplexity it's nearly a quarter of every citation, the highest share of any source anywhere. The places AI trusts most are not the places most businesses have spent the last decade optimizing.
Why This Matters Now
For twenty years the game was simple: rank your own pages, own your own real estate. AI search quietly changed the rules. Now the model often answers by quoting what other people said about a topic on the platforms it reads most - forums, video, professional networks - and only sometimes by quoting the business directly. If you don't have a presence where AI looks, you can be the best plumber in town and still never get named.
What the Data Shows
The citation landscape has a clear pecking order. A widely covered study reported by Search Engine Land found Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn are the three most-cited domains across AI answers. Reddit's dominance is well documented, sitting near 40% of citations across models, and its share is still climbing - Tinuiti's Q1 2026 report found Reddit citation share grew at least 73% across commercial categories.
But it's not uniform. Citation behavior varies sharply by platform: Reddit is huge on ChatGPT and Perplexity, while Google's Gemini has historically pulled far less from it. YouTube has surged as a cited source across the board, which tells you plain-spoken video content is being read and quoted, not just watched.
The takeaway isn't "go post on Reddit." It's that AI builds answers from a small set of high-trust sources, and your own domain is competing against all of them for a slot.
What I Make of It
Two things stand out from working with service businesses on this.
First, these are general-web numbers. Nobody has published the citation-source split for local, service-business queries specifically - "emergency electrician," "roof repair near me," and the like. My strong suspicion, from what I see, is that for local queries the mix shifts: Google Business Profile, directories like Yelp and Angi, and local news carry more weight than Reddit does. That's the study worth running, and it would give local businesses a real to-do list instead of a national one.
Second, the pattern rewards being talked about, not just talking. A business that shows up in a genuine Reddit thread, a helpful YouTube walkthrough, and a handful of directories is corroborated in exactly the places AI reads. A business that only has its own website is a single, self-interested source - the kind AI is least inclined to quote alone.
What to Do About It
You can't fake your way into these sources, and you shouldn't try. What works:
- Build a real, consistent presence on the platforms AI actually cites - genuine participation, not spam.
- Get your business listed and accurate across the directories relevant to your industry.
- Turn your best answers into short video, since video is increasingly cited.
- Keep earning reviews and local mentions, which are the third-party corroboration AI trusts for local businesses.
Methodology and Sources
This is an analysis of published 2025-2026 research on AI citation sources, paired with what I observe across LeadValets' local clients. The figures come from the third-party studies below and are not LeadValets' own primary research. Credit the original source and re-verify before publishing, as citation shares shift quickly between platform updates.
